“What the JGA has meant to me”
My Journey to the 18th Hole
For me, golf has always been more than just a sport, it’s been a metaphor for life. Each hole represents a different chapter, filled with challenges, victories, setbacks, and growth. And now, standing at the 18th hole of my junior golf journey and at 18 years old, I can look back with a deep sense of gratitude for how the Junior Golf Association (JGA) has shaped who I am today. Growing up in the JGA has been one of the most meaningful parts of my life.
From my early years to the present, it has been a constant source of growth, challenge, and connection. It didn’t just develop my swing or lower my scores, it helped build my character. Through every round, I’ve learned patience, resilience, and the importance of staying grounded whether I’m having my best game or my worst. The fundamentals of golf discipline, focus, and integrity have all naturally become values I now carry into every part of my life. Some of my favorite memories come from early morning tee times, riding to tournaments with my parents, and walking the course with people who started as competitors and became friends. The experiences may blur together over the years, but the lessons they taught me and the way they made me feel are unforgettable. I’ve learned that golf is a game that rewards patience and punishes shortcuts, and that same truth applies off the course too.
JGA gave me the space to grow not only as a golfer but as a person. Competing in tournaments taught me how to handle pressure, how to carry myself with grace, and how to keep moving forward even after a tough shot. I learned what true sportsmanship looks like: celebrating others’ successes, staying respectful in defeat, and understanding that we’re all out here trying to play our best game.
Beyond the competition, JGA helped me come out of my shell and find confidence in who I am. Walking up to the first tee with a group of new players used to intimidate me, but over time, I developed the ability to connect with others, communicate effectively, and carry myself with confidence and kindness. Those are life skills I’ll take with me far beyond the course. Looking back, I truly believe I wouldn’t be the person I am today without everything I’ve experienced through golf and the JGA. It’s taught me how to set goals, how to be consistent, and how to stay grounded when things don’t go my way. It’s taught me that every hole, every challenge, has something to teach you.
As I prepare to head off to college and step off this “18th hole,” I realize just how much of my foundation was built through this program. The JGA didn’t just prepare me to compete, it prepared me to lead, to listen, and to believe in myself even when things get tough. Everything I’ve learned will carry with me into the next round of life, into classrooms, internships, relationships, and all the challenges and opportunities that come next. I’m deeply grateful for every experience, every lesson, and every person who’s been part of this journey.
